Eva Sugeng is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Environment and Health within Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Faculty of Science, with additional appointments at AIMMS and APH - Health Behaviors & Chronic Diseases. She holds a PhD (2020) from VU Amsterdam focused on flame retardant exposure in children, complemented by a Bachelor's in Health and Life Sciences (VU Amsterdam) and Master's in Public Health from Maastricht University.
Her research investigates chemical exposure pathways and health impacts, specializing in flame retardants, phthalates, and endocrine disruptors. Current projects examine prenatal/childhood exposure determinants using mother-child cohorts like LINC (VU) and BIS (Australia), analyzing neurodevelopmental outcomes. Key interests include exposure assessment methods and health policy implications.
Publications (2018-2024) demonstrate consistent focus on household chemical exposure sources, developmental toxicology, and biomarker analysis. Recent work explores genetic vulnerability to phthalates and gender-specific health impacts of endocrine disruptors.
Awards:
- Posterprize BFR Conference (2017)
- KnowVU Award (2015)
- GrassRoots Award (2014)
She teaches bachelor courses in Health and Life Sciences and supervises student internships. Leads research in the 'Female reproductive toxicity of EDCs' project (2019-2024), collaborating with international teams on cohort studies.
Active in scientific dissemination through media commentary on chemical exposure risks and conference participation including Children's Environmental Health Network events.
