Dr. Eun Young Kwon serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Education. She co-coordinates the Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing concentration within the Special Education graduate program and teaches courses in literacy, curriculum development, and capstone projects. With 17 years of direct experience as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing across Delta School District and BC Provincial School for the Deaf settings, plus prior clinical work as a Speech-Language Pathologist in Korea supporting children with autism, she integrates frontline expertise into her academic role.
Her research prioritizes inclusive educational frameworks for deaf and hard of hearing students, emphasizing multilingual language development, equitable practices for immigrant families with disabilities, and community partnerships. She actively addresses challenges faced by children with multiple disabilities through culturally responsive pedagogy and systemic advocacy.
Dr. Kwon's contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards including:
- G.M. Dunlop Dissertation Award (Canadian Association of Educational Psychology, 2024)
- Inspirational Deaf Educator’s Achievement Award (Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing-BC, 2021)
As a faculty advisor, she supervises graduate students during field practicum experiences in the Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. Her teaching portfolio includes EPSE 524 (Practicum and Seminar in the Education of Learners who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing), EPSE 598 (Field Experiences: Extended Practicum), and EPSE 426 (Introduction to the Education of Students Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing), focusing on hands-on training for future educators. Her office is located in the Scarfe Library Block at UBC.
