Dr. Eugénie Duval is a Lecturer at the Essex Law School, University of Essex, where she has been teaching since July 2022. Her academic trajectory includes previous positions as a Visiting Postdoctoral Researcher at the Animal Welfare Program, University of British Columbia (June 2021-January 2022), and as an Adjunct Lecturer at Université de Caen Normandie (September 2020-August 2021) and University of Rouen (September 2015-August 2016).
Dr. Duval earned her PhD from Université de Caen Normandie in 2020 and completed her Master 2 at Pantheon-Sorbonne University in 2012. Her academic expertise spans multiple legal domains with a particular focus on animal law and its intersections with environmental and constitutional law.
Dr. Duval's research interests primarily focus on Animal Law, Constitutional Law, and Environmental Law, with particular attention to the legal frameworks governing animal welfare, organic agriculture regulations, and public participation in environmental decision-making. Her work critically examines how legal structures impact animal welfare standards, particularly in agricultural contexts, and analyzes the tension between economic interests and animal protection. She has presented her research at numerous international conferences, addressing topics such as animal transportation regulations, organic farming standards, and the role of public participation in environmental democracy. Her research demonstrates how animal welfare considerations are increasingly integrated into environmental law frameworks, though significant gaps remain in implementation and enforcement.
Dr. Duval's scholarly contributions reflect a strong trend toward policy-relevant research that bridges legal theory with practical animal welfare outcomes. Her recent work has increasingly focused on European Union regulations regarding animal welfare during transportation and in organic farming systems, with an emphasis on identifying regulatory gaps and proposing concrete policy improvements. She has been particularly active in analyzing how EU animal welfare commitments translate into effective protections for farm animals, with recent publications addressing heat stress during transportation and the effectiveness of organic certification standards.
Dr. Duval has received research funding from notable organizations including the Humane Slaughter Association (2024) for her work on 'Protecting farm animals from heat stress during transportation: are EU/UK new regulations fit for purpose?' and from The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament (2023) for 'EU animal health law on brucellosis.' These grants reflect the practical significance of her research in shaping animal welfare policy.
Her academic presentations demonstrate significant engagement with the international legal community, with invitations to speak at institutions including University of British Columbia, University of Lausanne, and various French universities. Her presentation topics consistently focus on the intersection of animal welfare law, environmental regulation, and democratic participation.
Dr. Duval maintains an active research agenda that bridges theoretical legal scholarship with practical policy implications, particularly in the emerging field of animal law. Her work contributes to growing academic and policy discussions about how legal frameworks can better protect animals while supporting sustainable agricultural transitions.
