Eugene Lowe, Jr. is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies at Northwestern University’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and an Instructor in the Higher Education Administration and Policy program at the School of Education and Social Policy. He holds dual faculty appointments, combining expertise in religious studies with higher education policy. His research focuses on American religion, social gospel movements, progressivism, and diversity initiatives in academia.
Dr. Lowe earned a PhD (1987) and MDiv (1978) from Union Theological Seminary, alongside a BA in Religion from Princeton University (1971). Previously, he served as Dean of Students at Princeton University (1983-1993), overseeing undergraduate affairs and contributing to the religion department.
His publications include Promise and Dilemma: Perspectives on Racial Diversity and Higher Education (Princeton University Press, 1999), supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and contributions to the Encyclopedia of Religion in America (2010). He has advised the Teagle Foundation on religious studies and liberal education, and consults for the U.S. Department of Education and Pew Charitable Trusts.
Lowe chairs external boards, including Berea College and Seabury Western Theological Seminary, and serves on advisory groups like the Illinois Board of Higher Education’s Faculty Advisory Council. His work emphasizes equity, racial diversity, and interdisciplinary collaboration in education.
