Eugene Chang, MD holds the following academic positions at the University of Arizona:
- Associate Professor, Department of Otolaryngology, College of Medicine
- Associate Professor, BIO5 Institute
- Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, Department of Otolaryngology
Dr. Chang's research spans three key domains: (1) Cystic fibrosis and chronic sinusitis, where he developed the first animal model of CF sinus disease and investigates novel therapies including gene therapy and CFTR potentiators; (2) Sinus microbiome, studying the microbial communities in the sinonasal cavities and how treatments alter them to prevent disease; and (3) Upper-lower airway interactions, exploring bidirectional influences between head/neck airways and lower respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on translational research in airway diseases, with emphasis on genetic susceptibility (e.g., CDHR3 gene in chronic rhinosinusitis) and immunological mechanisms (e.g., rhinovirus-induced ACE2 expression in asthma relevant to COVID-19).
Dr. Chang's current research is supported by grants from:
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
