Euan Barlow is a Senior Knowledge Exchange Fellow and Principal Knowledge Exchange Fellow within the Department of Management Science at the University of Strathclyde's Strathclyde Business School. He serves as Director of Knowledge Exchange for the Department and co-Director of the Informed Decision Analytics (IDeA) Centre, leading multi-disciplinary collaborations with engineers and scientists across industry sectors. His work bridges academic research and practical implementation through purpose-built decision-support tools.
His research spans metrology, robotics, marine engineering, renewable energy, maintenance reliability, water engineering, and ultrasonic systems. He specializes in discrete-event simulation, multi-objective evolutionary optimization, Markov decision processes, and expert elicitation techniques. This expertise enables him to develop novel methodologies for solving complex real-world problems across diverse industrial contexts, from offshore wind farm logistics to healthcare resource allocation.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a dual focus on healthcare systems optimization and energy infrastructure management. In healthcare, he addresses orthopaedic waiting lists, health technology assessment economics, and antibiotic subscription models using simulation and priority-setting frameworks. In energy systems, his work tackles nuclear reactor fuel selection, offshore wind installation logistics, and maintenance optimization for complex energy networks through stochastic programming and multi-objective optimization approaches.
Dr. Barlow has secured substantial research funding through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) with Fix Visual Effects Limited, Maru Syngro, and Scottish Water, plus major projects with BAE Systems and SSE. He serves as advisor to the Scottish Orthopaedic Service Delivery Group, National Orthopaedic Delivery Group, and NHS Scotland's Centre for Sustainable Delivery, while maintaining active membership in the Operational Research Group of Scotland and UK KE Hub for Mathematical Sciences.
As co-Director of the IDeA Centre, he leads a cross-disciplinary team developing decision analytics tools for industrial applications. His work directly supports UN Sustainable Development Goals through innovations in industry, innovation infrastructure, and sustainable energy systems, demonstrating consistent translation of mathematical sciences into tangible societal impact.
