Ethan Michelson is Professor of Sociology and East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University Bloomington, with a courtesy appointment in the Maurer School of Law. He specializes in contemporary Chinese society with a focus on law and society, particularly examining gender inequality, divorce courts, and the Chinese legal profession. His research has been supported by prestigious awards including the Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Program.
Michelson received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago's Department of Sociology in 2003. His educational background includes undergraduate studies at McGill University where he initially struggled with Chinese language but later renewed his interest through an anthropology class on contemporary China. After graduating in 1992, he spent a year studying Chinese at Nanjing University before pursuing graduate studies at Chicago.
His research focuses on the intersection of law, gender, and authoritarianism in China, with particular emphasis on how Chinese divorce courts operate and the gender injustices that occur within them. His work reveals routine violations of China's own laws regarding freedom of divorce, gender equality, and protection of women's physical security. Through extensive analysis of divorce trials from Chinese courts, he has documented how domestic violence victims are systematically disadvantaged in divorce proceedings.
Michelson's publications reveal a consistent focus on Chinese legal institutions, the legal profession, and gender dynamics within China's authoritarian context. His most significant work, 'Decoupling: Gender Injustice in China's Divorce Courts' (2022), represents a comprehensive analysis of nearly 150,000 divorce trials from two Chinese provinces.
