Esther Shorr is a Senior Lecturer in Hebrew at Brandeis University since 1986, specializing in beginner and intermediate Hebrew language instruction. She teaches at the Brandeis Hebrew Language Summer Institute and has been part of the Middlebury Language Schools at Middlebury College since 2008. Shorr co-authored the seminal textbook Brandeis Modern Hebrew and its intermediate edition, now widely adopted in American academia. She has extensive international teaching experience in Israel, England, and the U.S., and served as Acting Director of Brandeis's Hebrew program in Spring 2021.
Her educational background includes a B.A. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an M.A. from Hebrew College. Shorr actively participates in Jewish cultural activities, co-founding the Israeli folk music ensemble 'Shirli' and performing with the Zamir Chorale of Boston and Arbah Kanfote Jewish Women's Chorus until 2019.
Her research focuses on Hebrew pedagogy and Israeli cultural expression. With over three decades of service, she has received awards for 25 and 30 years of dedication to Brandeis University. Shorr's work combines academic rigor with community engagement, bridging language education and cultural preservation.
