Dr. Esther Nolte-t Hoen is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine within the Department of Biomolecular Health Sciences, specifically in the Infectious Diseases & Immunology division. She maintains an active research laboratory focused on extracellular vesicles and their role in cellular communication, particularly during infection and disease processes. Her work bridges veterinary medicine, immunology, and molecular biology, with significant contributions to understanding host-pathogen interactions.
Dr. Nolte-t Hoen's research expertise spans multiple interconnected areas within cellular communication and immunology. Her primary focus is on extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their critical role in intercellular communication during both steady-state conditions and disease states, particularly infections and cancer. She has developed novel technologies for EV isolation, characterization, and functional analysis, with particular emphasis on RNA as a key player in EV-mediated biological effects. Her work on host-pathogen interactions, especially with picornaviruses, has revealed important mechanisms by which viruses exploit EV pathways for transmission and immune evasion. Her laboratory employs advanced techniques including flow cytometry, proteomics, and imaging to study EV biology at molecular and cellular levels.
Dr. Nolte-t Hoen's extensive publication record demonstrates consistent leadership in the EV field, with research spanning fundamental EV biology to clinical applications. Her work shows a clear trajectory from basic EV characterization to understanding their role in disease mechanisms, particularly viral infections. The research increasingly incorporates multi-omics approaches (proteomics, RNA-seq) and advanced imaging techniques to dissect EV heterogeneity and function. Recent publications highlight growing interest in EV-based diagnostics and therapeutics, with applications in cancer, infectious diseases, and respiratory conditions.
Dr. Nolte-t Hoen has received significant competitive funding for her research, including:
- A European Research Council Starting Grant (1500 k€) in 2013 to explore parallel mechanisms underlying the formation of viruses and extracellular vesicles
- An NWO-VICI grant in 2022 to explore how EVs play a role in virus spreading and antiviral immune responses during picornavirus infections
Dr. Nolte-t Hoen is actively involved in developing the field of EV research by organizing meetings for the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles. She is co-founder and current president of the Netherlands Society for Extracellular Vesicles, organizes the EMBL hands-on training course on EVs, has coordinated position papers, and serves as associate editor for the Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, demonstrating her commitment to advancing the field and training the next generation of researchers.
