Esteban Guitart

Esteban Guitart is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Girona, Spain, where he teaches in the field of developmental and educational psychology. He is the Director of the Institute of Educational Research (IRE) and leads the Research Group on Culture, Education, and Human Development. His academic work is grounded in Vygotskian cultural-historical theory and focuses on the interplay between culture, identity, and education.

His research interests include identity construction in multicultural contexts, the continuity and discontinuity between family and school in culturally diverse settings, and the analysis of meaningful learning experiences. He approaches these topics through a narrative and multimethodological lens, emphasizing the sociocultural foundations of human development. He has developed theoretical and empirical work within the Funds of Knowledge framework and is the founder of the Funds of Knowledge International Alliance.

Dr. Guitart has been actively involved in international academic collaboration, having conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute for Cultural Research & Education in California and served as a visiting professor at the University of Arizona and the University of Colorado Boulder. He has also conducted academic work in Mexico and the UK, particularly at the Leeds Social Science Institute with Dr. Anna Bagnoli.

He is the editor of the journal Papeles de Trabajo sobre Cultura, Educación y Desarrollo Humano and coordinates the Interuniversity Postgraduate Program in Educational Psychology (MIPE and DIPE) at the University of Girona. He is a member of the International Society for Cultural and Activity Research and the Re-Generating CHAT Theory network led by Dr. Michael Cole.

His educational background includes a PhD in Educational Psychology through an Interuniversity Doctoral Program, with doctoral research conducted at the Intercultural University of Chiapas, Mexico, supported by a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. He holds degrees in both Psychology and Philosophy and completed part of his undergraduate studies at the University of Salamanca under a SICUE-SENECA scholarship.
