Esko Hakanen is a Researcher and Staff Scientist at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management, Aalto University, where he earned his Doctoral degree in Engineering and Technology in 2019. His research focuses on innovation ecosystems, business models, blockchain technologies, and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on decentralized systems and collective governance. He has contributed to 31 peer-reviewed publications and one supervised thesis, spanning topics like anti-rival accounting, digital commons, and sustainable operations.
Key research interests include ecosystem design, value creation mechanisms, and leveraging blockchain for sustainability. He actively participates in projects such as ATARCA (Accounting Technologies for Anti-Rival Coordination and Allocation), exploring technologies for equitable resource allocation. Hakanen has received the Best Paper Award at the 2023 International Conference on CSR, Sustainability, Ethics & Governance for work on sustainable business models.
His advisory and grant activities include contributions to the ATARCA project (2021–2023) and involvement in initiatives like PlastLIFE, promoting circular economy practices. Hakanen collaborates internationally, presenting at conferences such as the Academy of Management and the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences.
