Esko Niemi is a Professor at Aalto University, holding dual appointments in the Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering and the Materials to Products research group. He earned his Doctoral degree in Engineering and Technology from Helsinki University of Technology (now part of Aalto University) in 1999, following earlier degrees from the University of Manchester and Helsinki University of Technology. His research focuses on additive manufacturing, finite element analysis, production scheduling, and material science, with notable contributions to melt pool dynamics, powder bed fusion processes, and material anisotropy studies. He has led multiple EU and national projects, including TwinFlow (2024-2026), Pathfinder, and KnowNet. Niemi has authored over 65 publications and actively contributes to editorial boards of journals such as the International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to industry innovation and infrastructure.
Research interests span advanced manufacturing technologies, simulation-driven material characterization, and optimization of production systems. Recent projects emphasize sustainable manufacturing and cross-industry knowledge exchange networks. He has supervised three theses and collaborates internationally on topics like Lean manufacturing and supply chain monitoring.
