Dr. Erwin Pokorny is an art historian specializing in Renaissance art with particular expertise in Old Master drawings, graphic techniques, and the works of Albrecht Dürer and Hieronymus Bosch. He serves as an external lecturer at the University of Vienna's Department of Art History within the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, teaching courses on graphic techniques and imperial woodcut projects. His research maintains strong institutional connections with the Albertina Museum in Vienna where he currently contributes to major research initiatives.
His academic background includes:
- 1980-1989: Studied art history and history at the University of Vienna
Dr. Pokorny's research examines how visual representation served imperial propaganda under Emperor Maximilian I, analyzing technical aspects of drawing and printmaking while exploring iconographic connections between Netherlandish and German art traditions. His scholarship reveals intricate relationships between artistic technique, patronage, and cultural exchange during the late medieval and early modern periods, with particular attention to attribution studies, workshop practices, and the physical evidence within artworks themselves.
His recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on technical analysis of artworks, attribution studies, and the cultural context of Renaissance imagery. Pokorny frequently examines underdrawings, signatures, and workshop practices to establish more precise chronologies and authorship. His work on Maximilian I's visual programs shows particular attention to how woodcut series functioned as political propaganda, while his Bosch studies explore connections between manuscript illumination and panel painting.
Dr. Pokorny has secured significant research funding through multiple FWF (Austrian Science Fund) projects:
- FWF-Projekt "Hugo van der Goes und die niederländische Zeichnung" (2006-2009)
- FWF-Sonderforschungsbereich "Managing Maximilian" with the sub-project "Depicting Maximilian" (2023-present)
- Research partner for FWF project "Die verborgenen Ursprünge des österreichischen Humanismus" (2020-2022)
As an external lecturer since 2011, Dr. Pokorny has taught at the University of Vienna, Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck, and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. His current research involves close collaboration with the Albertina Museum in Vienna, where the "Depicting Maximilian" project represents a significant interdisciplinary effort examining one of the most important woodcut series from the Renaissance period. His recent curation of the exhibition "Maximilianus. Die Kunst des Kaisers" (2017-2019) at the Südtiroler Landesmuseum further demonstrates his expertise in imperial visual culture.
