Erol Gelenbe is the Dennis Gabor Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London. His foundational contributions include the invention of G-Networks and Random Neural Networks (RNN), enabling performance evaluation of computer systems and networks. He pioneered early architectures for multi-hop/ multi-path transmission of voice and images. His recent research focuses on Software Defined Networks (SDNs), energy savings in ICT, network security, and reinforcement/deep learning in neural networks.
Research Interests:
- Cognitive Packet Networks (CPN) with reinforcement learning-driven routing
- Real-time QoS optimization using Goal Functions and Smart Packets
- Energy-efficient network architectures
- Security mechanisms in modern networks
- Neural network implementations for distributed decision-making
Scientific Achievements:
- Recipient of the Mustafa Prize (2017), ACM SIGMETRICS Award (2008), and Grand Prix France Telecom (1996)
- Elected Fellow across major institutions including ACM, IEEE, and national academies of multiple countries
Experimental Work: CPN implemented in 10-40 node testbeds, intercontinental overlay networks, SDN routers, and cloud server communication systems.
