Ernesto Semán serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Bergen's Faculty of Humanities. His academic work bridges Latin American studies, political theory, and cultural history with a particular focus on populism, national identity formation, and the cultural politics of the Cold War era in the Americas.
Semán's research interests span Latin American politics, populism studies, cultural history, race and national identity, Cold War cultural politics, and Argentine history. His work consistently examines how political imagination is shaped through cultural production, historical memory, and linguistic frameworks. He explores the connections between literature, political discourse, and historical consciousness, particularly in the Argentine context but with transnational implications.
His recent publications reveal a consistent scholarly trajectory examining the intersections of populism, national identity, and cultural production in Latin America. Semán's work demonstrates sophisticated analysis of how political concepts are embedded in cultural artifacts and historical narratives, with particular attention to the emotional dimensions of political discourse (as seen in his work on 'the etymology of despair'). His scholarship frequently connects historical analysis with contemporary political challenges in the region.
Semán maintains an active presence in both academic and public intellectual spheres, contributing to major publications including the Financial Times, Washington Post, and NACLA Report on the Americas. His work bridges scholarly analysis with public commentary on contemporary Latin American politics, particularly regarding populism and democratic governance.
