Ermioni Xanthopoulou

Ermioni Xanthopoulou is a Senior Lecturer in Law at Brunel Law School, Brunel University London, within the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences. Her work bridges EU criminal law, migration and asylum law, and human rights, with a focus on mutual trust, proportionality, and rule of law challenges.

Her research critically examines the EU's Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, particularly how mutual trust between member states evolves in response to human rights violations, prison conditions, and judicial independence issues. She led the Athena Swan Research Award 2022-2023 project on externalizing asylum law and contributed to the European Commission's Horizon 2020 ITFLOWS project on migration flow prediction tools. Recent publications include analyses of the European Arrest Warrant, Dublin System reforms, and Brexit asylum cooperation, with a forthcoming British Academy-funded project on asylum outsourcing policies (2025).
