Dr Erin Shanahan is a University of Sydney a'Beckett Research Fellow affiliated with the School of Life and Environmental Sciences and the Charles Perkins Centre. Her work focuses on the gut microbiome's role in health and disease, particularly in colorectal cancer, immunotherapy outcomes, and functional gastrointestinal disorders. She leads the Microbiome and Gut Health Group at the Charles Perkins Centre.
Research interests include microbiome-gut-brain interactions, diet-microbiome relationships, and the impact of microbial communities on cancer treatments. Her studies explore how microbial composition influences immune responses, treatment efficacy, and gastrointestinal dysfunction.
Recent projects include investigating the duodenal microbiota's link to gastric emptying in dyspepsia, the effects of hive stress on honeybee microbiomes, and the development of analytical methods for short-chain fatty acids. Her work spans clinical, ecological, and computational approaches.
Key grants include funding from NHMRC for studying microbe-immune interactions in cancer immunotherapy and NSW Health grants targeting microbiome-based cancer therapy improvements. She also explores symbiotic relationships in insects via Strategic Partnership grants.
Dr Shanahan's research integrates microbiology, immunology, and computational biology to address translational challenges in gut health and oncology, with a focus on developing diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies.
