Erin Scanlon is an Assistant Professor in Residence in the Department of Physics at the Avery Point campus of the University of Connecticut, part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Her work focuses on advancing disability inclusion, equity, and social justice in physics education and STEM fields. She holds a Ph.D. in Developmental Education from Texas State University, an M.S. in Physics from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a B.S. in Physics from Michigan Technological University.
Her research emphasizes dismantling barriers faced by disabled learners through Universal Design for Learning (UDL), examining experiences of disabled physics students, and advocating for systemic change in STEM education. Key areas include:
- Disability models and their impact on teaching practices
- Accessibility in physics curricula and laboratory settings
- Faculty perceptions of disability in academic careers
Her recent publications explore topics such as instructional practices enabling disabled learners, validation of inclusive teaching strategies, and career viability perceptions among physicists with disabilities. She has collaborated on studies addressing barriers in graduate training environments and qualitative research methodologies accommodating participant needs.
