Erin H. Nolan is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Visual Culture at Bates College, where she examines cross-cultural image circulation across the Mediterranean and Atlantic worlds. Her research deconstructs empire-centric narratives through the lens of photography's transnational itineraries.

Her work bridges Islamic art, modernism, and photographic theory, focusing on how 19th-century Ottoman photographs interact with global visual frameworks. Current projects include a monograph on Portrait Atlas: The Migration of Nineteenth-century Ottoman Photographs.
Recent publications address maternal orientalism, transatlantic collaborations, and decolonizing methodologies, reflecting her commitment to recentering global art histories. Awards include support from the Terra Foundation, Getty Research Institute, and Historians of Islamic Art.
At Bates, she teaches courses like Decolonizing the Museum and Politics of Place: Global Perspectives on American Art, challenging students to critically analyze vision's cultural contingencies. Her research has been presented at major forums including the College Art Association Annual Conference and Expanding Islamic Art History Conference.
