Erin F. Delaney is a Professor of Law at University College London (UCL), serving as the Inaugural Director of the Global Centre for Democratic Constitutionalism. She retains an affiliation with Northwestern University, where she held dual roles as Professor of Law at the Pritzker School of Law and Professor of Political Science (by courtesy) at the Weinberg College of Arts and Letters. Her leadership roles include Secretary General of the International Society of Public Law, Co-Editor of the Hart Series on Judging and the Courts, and Co-Editor of the International & Comparative Law Section of JOTWELL. She also sits on the editorial boards of Public Law and the Brill Series on Studies in Territorial and Cultural Diversity Governance.
Delaney’s academic journey includes a J.D., magna cum laude, from NYU School of Law (where she was Editor-in-Chief of the NYU Law Review), an M.Phil. and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (with her dissertation earning the Walter Bagehot Prize), and an A.B. in Government, magna cum laude, from Harvard College. She previously clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter and Second Circuit Judge Guido Calabresi.
Her research focuses on comparative constitutional law, federalism, and democratic governance. She has held prestigious fellowships at Edinburgh University, the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and the Eurac Research’s Institute for Comparative Federalism. Her work bridges legal scholarship and political theory, with a global perspective on constitutional design and institutional accountability. Key awards include the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair at McGill University and membership in the American Law Institute.
Delaney’s professional network extends to advisory roles, including the Advisory Board of the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law. Her current initiatives at UCL’s Global Centre aim to advance interdisciplinary research on democratic constitutionalism in an era of global challenges.
