Professor Anderson's research focuses on gendered experiences at individual, interactional, and institutional levels. Her work explores gender and family roles through welfare recipients' work requirements, men's nontraditional parenting roles as primary caregivers, and gender socialization through scouting organizations. She examines women's roles as role models in Girl Scouts and public reactions to Boys Scouts' membership and name changes. Her scholarly contributions span topics including pandemic impacts on mental health and employment, family-friendly academic policies, and gender socialization in youth organizations.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory from examining welfare-to-work programs and gender roles in family dynamics to contemporary analyses of pandemic impacts on gender inequality and mental health. Anderson's research consistently bridges theoretical sociology with practical applications for social policy and academic workplace improvements.
Professor Anderson has served as Chair of Sociology at Washington College during two periods: 2016-2020 and 2011-2014. She teaches across the sociology curriculum including Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of the Family, Sociology of Gender, Social Theory, Work & Gender, and Sociology of the Body.
She has made significant contributions to academic discourse through her editorial work, particularly the co-edited volume Family-Friendly Policies and Practices in Academe (2015), which provides empirical evidence for family-supportive policies in higher education institutions.
