Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Political Science from University of Washington
- MA from University of Washington
- BA from University of Virginia
Professor Anderson's research focuses on the comparative political economy of welfare states, with particular expertise in pension systems, European integration effects on national social policies, and the evolving public-private mix in social provision. Her work employs historical institutionalist approaches to analyze how welfare states adapt to economic and demographic pressures while navigating political constraints. She has made significant contributions to understanding policy drift in pension systems, the politics of mortgage credit expansion in coordinated market economies, and the impact of Europeanization on national welfare state reforms.
Her most recent publications reveal a strong focus on contemporary challenges to welfare states, particularly examining old-age poverty, public-private pension mixes, and the political dynamics of pension reforms across European contexts. Her work consistently bridges theoretical insights with policy relevance, analyzing how institutional structures mediate responses to economic pressures.
Professor Anderson has received numerous professional honors, including:
- Elected Chair of the Council for European Studies (2021-2024)
- Keynote speaker at Symposium on 'New Social Risks and Pension Policies in Europe' (2019)
- Keynote for Annual Meeting of Research Network of German Pension Insurance Agency (2016)
- Chairperson of Luebbert Award for Best Book in Comparative Politics (2016/17)
- Member of Editorial Board, Comparative Political Studies (since 2024)
Her research has been supported by major grants from NORFACE, Hans Boeckler Foundation, Gak Foundation, and European Union programs. She has served on evaluation panels for multiple national research councils including Swedish Research Council, German Research Association, Netherlands Science Organisation, and Swiss National Science Foundation. Professor Anderson actively mentors PhD students through multiple PhD Roundtable courses and has coordinated numerous graduate-level courses including 'Politics of Welfare State' and 'EU Social Policy'.
Professor Anderson maintains active collaborations with international research networks and contributes to policy discussions through membership on scientific advisory boards in Germany and consultancy for the Committee on Social Protection of the Houses of the Oireachtas in Ireland. Her trilingual capabilities in Swedish, German, and Dutch facilitate deep engagement with Nordic and continental European welfare state research communities.
