Erika Weinthal is the John O. Blackburn Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Environmental Social Systems Division at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. She holds secondary appointments in the School of Public Policy, Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, and Duke Kunshan University. Her research focuses on global environmental politics, environmental security, and climate adaptation, with expertise in water governance, energy transitions, and resource conflict. Dr. Weinthal has authored influential books such as State Making and Environmental Cooperation and Oil is not a Curse, and co-edited major handbooks including The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Environmental Politics.
Education: Ph.D. (1998), M.Phil. (1994) in Political Science from Columbia University; B.A. (1989) in Political Science from Oberlin College.
Research interests span environmental conflict resolution, climate justice, and the political economy of natural resources. Notable projects include assessing human health impacts of oilfield water use and analyzing the water-energy nexus in Middle Eastern conflicts. She has received prestigious awards including the Chadwick Alger Prize and the Women Peacebuilders for Water Award. Dr. Weinthal co-founded the Environmental Peacebuilding Association and actively engages in policy advocacy on environmental governance and post-conflict reconstruction.
Recent grants support interdisciplinary work on environmental justice in North Carolina, Duke-DKU collaborations on environmental politics, and One Health initiatives in Mongolia. Her research bridges academic inquiry with actionable solutions for global sustainability challenges.
