Erika Berroth is an Associate Professor of German at Southwestern University, where she teaches language, literature, and culture courses. She holds a Staatsexamen (MA equivalent) from Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, a postgraduate degree in English from the University of Nottingham, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2013). Her research focuses on transnational identity narratives in German literature by authors with migration backgrounds, environmental humanities, and pedagogical approaches to German studies.
Dr. Berroth has received grants from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Mellon Foundation, and Sam Taylor Fellowship. She actively participates in academic organizations like the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) and German Studies Association (GSA), recently presenting on topics such as culinary symbolism in fairy tales and digital archives of migrant voices. She also organizes regional conferences, such as the 2024 Texas AATG conference at Southwestern.
Her teaching excellence was recognized with the Southwestern University Teaching Award (2005). She promotes community engagement as a DAAD Ortslektorin and has curated literary collections for classroom use. Current projects include integrating climate science texts and fostering interdisciplinary food studies in German curriculum.
