Erika Haber is a Full Professor of Russian Language, Literature, and Culture at Syracuse University’s College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics. She serves as Russian Program Coordinator and Undergraduate Advisor, overseeing academic guidance and curriculum development for Russian majors/minors. Her roles also include advising study abroad programs in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Education: PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures (University of Michigan, 1993), MA and BA in Russian from SUNY Albany (1987, 1985), with a CAS in Russian Translation. Her research focuses on Russian children’s literature, Soviet literary adaptations, and Environmental Humanities. Notable works include Oz behind the Iron Curtain (2017) and its Russian translation Страна Оз за железным занавесом (2023), analyzing Aleksandr Volkov’s Soviet-era adaptations of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz.
Teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to Russian culture: courses include Russian Fairy Tales and Folklore, Dystopian Fiction, Food Culture, and the Avant-Garde movement. She has designed over 30 courses bridging language instruction and cultural studies.
Service roles span departmental leadership (e.g., Third-Year Review Committee, Chair Selection Committee) and national/international editorial boards, including Детские чтения and Symposium: A Quarterly Journal. Recent conference engagements include virtual discussions on Volkov’s legacy and Soviet children’s literature.
