Erik Snapp is an Adjunct Professor of Neuroscience and Director of Student and Postdoctoral Programs at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Research Campus. His research focuses on the cell biology of secretory protein synthesis, leveraging live cell imaging, fluorescence microscopy, and biochemical techniques to study endoplasmic reticulum (ER) dynamics and protein folding mechanisms. He directs programs fostering collaborative neuroscience research with an emphasis on computational approaches and tool development, particularly in fluorescent protein technologies.
Snapp's work addresses protein misfolding diseases (e.g., cystic fibrosis) and viral exploitation of ER processes (e.g., HIV). He has pioneered methods like FRAP and FLIP for protein mobility studies and developed advanced fluorescent probes for oxidizing cellular environments. His recent efforts include optimizing fluorescent proteins for organelle-specific use and writing a free eBook on securing faculty positions.
He leads the Janelia Joint Graduate Program in Neuroscience, collaborating with Johns Hopkins University. His research integrates quantitative microscopy, molecular biology, and biochemistry to dissect ER function under stress conditions and during disease states.
