Erik Ruggles is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Vermont, located in Innovation Hall E333. He holds a B.S. from Ithaca College (1994), M.S. from Bucknell University (1996), and Ph.D. from Michigan State University (2003). His research focuses on synthesizing non-natural amino acid derivatives and investigating their structural and redox properties, particularly in thioredoxin reductase systems.
Research interests include developing methodologies for amino acid isosteres, analyzing disulfide/selenosulfide ring conformations, and understanding selenium's biochemical advantages over sulfur. His work combines synthetic organic chemistry with physical organic studies to explore redox potentials and enzyme functionality under oxidative stress.
Teaching emphasizes active learning through technology-enhanced visualizations, group problem-solving, and hands-on demonstrations. He currently teaches CHEM 031 and 032 courses. His philosophy prioritizes student engagement and problem-solving skill development over rote memorization.
Collaborates with Dr. Hondal’s research group, focusing on γ-turn mimics and enzyme selenium utilization mechanisms. No specific awards are listed, but his work contributes to understanding biochemical redox systems and enzyme stability.
