Erik Bieging, MD, MS, serves as an Assistant Professor (Clinical) in Internal Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Radiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. His clinical practice is centered at the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center, where he specializes in advanced cardiac imaging modalities including cardiac MRI, CT, nuclear cardiology, and echocardiography for veteran populations.
Dr. Bieging's academic training includes:
- B.S. and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison
- M.D., University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (2012)
- Internal Medicine Residency, University of Utah (2015)
- Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship, University of Utah (2016)
- Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, University of Utah (2019)
His research program focuses on clinical translation of novel image processing techniques for cardiac MR and CT. Key areas include statistical shape analysis of left atrial structures to predict stroke and ablation outcomes in atrial fibrillation, development of rapid perfusion protocols for arrhythmia patients, and prognostic value of cardiac scar imaging. Leveraging his biomedical engineering background, he develops computational tools to extract quantitative biomarkers from cardiac images for enhanced risk stratification.
Dr. Bieging's publication record (2008-2022) demonstrates a clear evolution from laryngeal biomechanics research to cardiovascular imaging specialization. Recent work (2015-2022) constitutes 8 of 11 publications, consistently addressing left atrial morphology, arrhythmia prediction, and advanced cardiac imaging methodologies. His research integrates computational modeling with clinical cardiology to solve practical diagnostic challenges in cardiac MRI/CT, establishing a cohesive trajectory toward improving quantitative cardiac diagnostics.
