Erica C Avrami is the James Marston Fitch Assistant Professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). She specializes in integrating sustainability, social justice, and equity into heritage conservation practices. Her research bridges policy, urban planning, and cultural preservation, addressing challenges such as climate resilience, anti-racism in preservation, and the intersection of heritage with global industries like fashion.
Her work emphasizes community-centered approaches, particularly in marginalized contexts, and explores the role of heritage in fostering equitable urban development. Recent projects include studies on Red Hook, Brooklyn, and Kyrgyzstan’s ancestral cemeteries. Avrami collaborates extensively with institutions and scholars, including Frank Matero, and contributes to Terra Education initiatives focused on earthen architecture conservation.
