Eric Wakin serves as a Research Fellow, Deputy Director of the Hoover Institution, and the Everett and Jane Hauck Director of the Institution's Library and Archives at Stanford University, where he oversees strategic direction and operations of these critical resources.
His academic background spans history, Southeast Asian studies, and political science. Wakin's research focuses on historical aspects of gun control in 19th century America, particularly in New York City, building on his earlier work examining anthropology's role in counterinsurgency operations in Thailand.
His expertise in archives management and historical research has led him to advise numerous corporate and nonprofit entities on history and archive-related issues, while also consulting on leadership and operational effectiveness in libraries and special collections.
- BA in English literature from Columbia University
- MA in Southeast Asian studies and MA in political science from the University of Michigan (FLAS Fellow)
- PhD in history from Columbia University (Richard Hofstadter Fellow and President's Fellow)
Before joining Hoover, Wakin served as the Herbert H. Lehman Curator for American History and Curator of Manuscripts at Columbia University's Rare Book & Manuscript Library, where he also taught courses in the History Department on public history, memory and narrative, archives and knowledge, and theory.
His professional experience extends beyond academia to business development, competitive intelligence, strategic communications, and digital strategy at Ernst & Young, IBM Custom Publishing, Kroll, Paul Hastings, and Technology Investor.
