Dr. Eric Kaltman is an Assistant Professor of Media and Technology Studies in the History, Classics, & Religion Department at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from UC Santa Cruz, an MA in Interdisciplinary Asian Studies from UC Berkeley, and a BA in History and Asian Studies from the University of Michigan. His research focuses on methodologies for recovering historical digital software and records through projects like the Software History Futures and Technologies (SHFT) group. He has previously held positions as an Assistant Professor at California State University Channel Islands and a CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow for Data Curation at Carnegie Mellon University Libraries.
Key research areas include software emulation workflows, digital preservation strategies for interactive media (e.g., Adobe Flash), and analysis of large-scale software development archives. His work bridges computer science, archival science, and humanities through tools like the Game and Interactive Software Scholarship Toolkit (GISST) and collaborations with initiatives like Emulation as a Service Infrastructure (EaaSI). Courses taught include 'History of Computing,' 'Understanding Video Games,' and 'Special Topics in Media Studies.'
Recent publications emphasize computational archival science, emulation practices, and the intersection of game design with historical preservation. His projects address challenges in preserving legacy software systems and developing frameworks for studying digital cultural artifacts. Current initiatives involve undergraduate research in areas like data redundancy reduction and global Flash preservation efforts.
