Eric VanLuvanee serves as an Instructor of Japanese in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures within the University of Delaware's College of Arts & Sciences. He has held this position since August 2010, teaching courses ranging from Elementary Japanese to literature survey and translation courses.
His academic background includes a B.A. in East Asian Studies with Japanese concentration from the University of Delaware (2003) and an M.A. in Japanese Language and Literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2005), where he focused on modern Japanese literature with specialization in the fantasy genre.
VanLuvanee's research interests span several interconnected areas: Modern Japanese Fantasy literature (particularly The Guin Saga series by Kaoru Kurimoto), video game studies, Japanese linguistic history, and Japanese-American cross-cultural communication in online gaming environments. He holds JLPT N1 certification, the highest level of Japanese language proficiency.
Since 2011, he has co-directed the university's study abroad program in Kobe, Japan, alongside Mutsuko Sato, where he teaches 'Contemporary Japan I.' He also serves as the department's Japanese Language Proficiency Test advisor, guiding students through the JLPT examination process.
