Eric Van Rythoven is Adjunct Research Professor in Political Science at Carleton University, researching emotion, security, and international politics. He holds a PhD from Carleton and teaches courses on Canadian foreign policy, international relations theory, and affective diplomacy.
His work analyzes:
- Emotional dynamics in security discourse
- Affective dimensions of securitization
- Historical approaches to political feeling
Van Rythoven co-edited Methodology and Emotion in International Relations (Routledge, 2019) and publishes on topics ranging from Indigenous protest securitization to Walter Lippmann's emotion theories. His research combines political theory with discourse analysis of parliamentary debates, legal hearings, and media texts.
He serves on governing boards of the Philosophy of Science Association and Philosophy of Social Science Roundtable, advancing methodological innovation in IR emotion studies.
