Dr Eric Stoddart is a Lecturer in Practical Theology at the School of Divinity, University of St Andrews, Scotland. He joined the university in 2005 after roles at the University of Aberdeen and the Scottish Churches Open College. His academic career follows a background in pastoral ministry in a Scottish Baptist church. He holds a PhD in Practical Theology from the University of Aberdeen (2001).
- Served as Online Learning Officer, Director of Operations (management team), Undergraduate Admissions Officer, and other administrative roles at St Andrews.
- Editor of the School’s alumni magazine In Principio and former editor of Practical Theology journal.
His research focuses on surveillance and digital technologies from a practical theological perspective, emphasizing ethical critique and solidarity with marginalized groups. He coordinates the Surveillance & Religion Network, an international initiative funded by the AHRC (2016–2018) exploring surveillance through interdisciplinary and theological lenses. Key projects include the Bible and the Contemporary World program’s Honorary Research Assistants scheme.
Teaching includes interdisciplinary modules on citizenship, digital faith, and surveillance theology. He has delivered keynote lectures on surveillance and theology at institutions like Durham University and the Doctorate in Practical Theology consortium.
His work critiques surveillance cultures through a Christological framework, advocating for non-naïve trust in God’s sovereignty over technological determinism. Collaborative projects include the Conversations in Practical Theology YouTube series with Saiyyidah Zaidi.
