Eric Ramírez-Weaver

Eric Ramírez-Weaver is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as Director of the Undergraduate Program in Art History. His research bridges medieval art, theology, philosophy, and scientific thought, with a focus on illuminated manuscripts from the 3rd to 15th centuries.

Ramírez-Weaver explores intersections of art and science, particularly through astronomical illuminated manuscripts and late-Gothic painting at the Bohemian court of Prague. His work challenges traditional narratives about medieval scientific knowledge by analyzing its artistic and cultural contexts.

His publications include Saving Science: Capturing the Heavens in Carolingian Manuscripts (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2017) and essays such as "Classical constellations in Carolingian codices" (2014) and "Reading the Heavens" (2014). These contributions examine Carolingian manuscript illumination, late-Gothic painting, and diagrammatic structures in medieval philosophy.
