Eric Pyle is a Professor of Geoscience Education in the Department of Geology & Environmental Science at James Madison University's College of Science & Mathematics. He joined JMU in 2005 and also serves as the Education & Outreach Curator of the JMU Mineral Museum, Co-director for the JMU Center for STEM Education and Outreach, and Coordinator for Science Teacher Preparation.
- PhD in Science Education (1995, University of Georgia)
- MS in Geology (1986, Emory University)
- BS in Earth Science (1983, University of North Carolina at Charlotte)
Pyle specializes in geoscience education research with a focus on the affective domain in teaching. His work examines motivational variables in science learning environments, connecting secondary education with higher education in geosciences. He has developed assessment protocols that measure cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains in geoscience education.
His research has identified key motivational variables including Relatedness, Autonomy, Competence, Connectedness, Autonomy Support, and Effectance. These variables have been used to develop quantitative instruments for assessing student responses to learning environments.
- NAGT Counselor for Virginia
- NSTA Preservice Teacher Preparation Committee member
Pyle teaches courses ranging from introductory Physical Geology to specialized courses like History & Philosophy of the Geosciences and Field Methods in Geology. He has developed performance assessment protocols for geoscience programs and focuses on creating learning environments that promote student effort through motivation rather than punitive approaches.
