Eric Ordway is a ceramic artist and educator currently serving as Senior Craft, Service, Maintenance Professional and Part-time Adjunct Professor at the University of Missouri's School of Visual Studies. Born and raised near Columbia, MO, he has developed a national reputation for his functional wood-fired and soda-fired pottery. Ordway holds an MFA from the University of Missouri (2019), a BFA from Colorado State University-Pueblo (2013), and an AA from Moberly Area Community College (2008).
His educational background includes post-baccalaureate studies at MU (2013-2015) and a year-long residency at the Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg, FL (2015-2016). Prior to his current position, he taught ceramics at Truman State University for three years (2019-2022) and served as Department Head of Ceramics at Access Arts, a nonprofit in Columbia, MO (2021-2023).
Ordway's artistic practice focuses on functional ceramics with an emphasis on atmospheric firing techniques. His work is characterized as rustic, weathered, and elegant, designed to invite contemplative engagement through use. He creates primarily functional vessels including ale bowls, teapots, coffee sets, and tableware that balance utility with artistic expression. His distinctive style incorporates wood firing, soda firing, and flashing slips to create surfaces that are both visually compelling and tactilely engaging.
Analysis of his recent publications and exhibitions reveals a consistent focus on functional ceramics, atmospheric firing techniques, and the philosophical dimensions of pottery making. His work demonstrates mastery of technical processes while maintaining a strong connection to the experiential and contemplative aspects of functional art.
Among his notable achievements is being named Ceramics Monthly's 2023 Emerging Artist, one of the most prestigious recognitions for early-career ceramic artists. Other significant awards include the George VanOstrand Fellowship from Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (2023), 3rd Place in the KC Clay Guild Teabowl National 2023, and the Diamond Core Award in the KC Clay Guild Teabowl National 2022.
Ordway maintains an active exhibition schedule with recent shows at the Mayer Museum at Angelo State University, Riverside Pottery, and the International Ceramics Competition in Carouge, Switzerland. He is represented by Highland Studio and Gallery, Schaller Gallery, Sager Reeves Gallery, and Plough Gallery. His teaching philosophy emphasizes deliberate studio practice and the integration of technical skill with artistic expression.
As both a technician supporting the ceramics program at MU and a part-time instructor, Ordway contributes to ceramic education through hands-on teaching and technical support. His dual role allows him to mentor students while continuing his own studio practice, creating a bridge between professional artistry and academic instruction.
