Eric Markiewicz is a University Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Université Polytechnique des Hauts-de-France (UPHF), where he currently serves as Vice-President of the Research and Development Council, a position he has held since 2016 with reappointments in 2020 and 2024. He also serves as Director of Research at INSA Hauts-de-France, a component institution of UPHF, since 2020.
Educational Background:
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering from UVHC (1994)
- Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (2000)
Professor Markiewicz specializes in the behavior of materials and structures at high loading speeds for crash and impact applications. His research focuses on sustainable transport and mobility, with particular expertise in impact engineering and structural dynamics. He has played a pivotal role in developing UPHF's strategic focus on "Sustainable Transport and Mobility" since 2004 through coordination of major multidisciplinary projects including TAT, CISIT, and ELSAT 2020.
His publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to impact engineering, materials science, and sustainable transportation research over multiple decades, with more than 80 articles in impactful journals and nearly 200 conference presentations. The research trajectory shows increasing integration of sustainability considerations into traditional mechanical engineering applications.
Professional Recognition:
- Member of editorial board, International Journal of Impact Engineering
- Member of Governing Board, International Society of Impact Engineering
- Elected member of Governing Board, DYMAT (European association for dynamic behavior of materials)
Professor Markiewicz has supervised nearly 30 doctoral students throughout his career. He has secured and coordinated major multidisciplinary research projects under the CPER-PO framework, which have significantly structured regional research and established UPHF's leadership in sustainable transport. His grant portfolio reflects strategic alignment with European and regional research priorities in transportation.
He directs the CNRS Research Federation 3733 "Land Transport and Mobility" since January 2016, which involves five regional research units (LAMIH, IEMN, CRIStAL, LaMcube, and LMFL). Previously, he directed the LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201 research laboratory from 2006 to 2009 and served as Director of the Sustainable Transport and Mobility Department at UVHC until 2015.
