Eric L. Hegg is a Professor at the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and the Dean of the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and a B.A. from Kalamazoo College, with postdoctoral training at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on heme biosynthesis, oxygen utilization, and renewable bioenergy, particularly biomass conversion and microbial hydrogen production.
- Ph.D., 1996, University of Wisconsin
- B.A., 1991, Kalamazoo College
Hegg's research spans lignin depolymerization, metalloenzymes, and sustainable energy solutions. His work employs interdisciplinary approaches in biochemistry, environmental science, and chemical engineering to develop green technologies for lignin valorization and biofuel production. Recent publications highlight advancements in electroreductive lignin cleavage, Cu-catalyzed biomass pretreatment, and structural studies of heme enzymes.
His team has received recognition through awards such as the NSF Career Award and AAAS Fellowship. Former and current students include Gracielou Klinger, Adam Cornish, and Louisa Ellis. The Hegg Lab collaborates on projects involving lignin conversion, bio-based chemicals, and hydrogenase studies, with a focus on technoeconomic analysis and biorefinery optimization.
- AAAS Fellow (2019)
- Big Ten Academic Network Leadership Program Fellow (2016)
- NSF Career Award (2004)
- Cottrell Scholars Award (2002)
Hegg advises a diverse group of graduate students and research associates, including those working on lignin depolymerization, cytochrome mechanisms, and bioenergy applications. His lab is actively involved in scaling up patented processes for biomass conversion and exploring microbial systems for sustainable chemical production.
