Eric Hunter, PhD, is the Department Executive Officer (DEO) and Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa, as well as the Harriet B. and Harold S. Brady Chair in Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on occupational voice use in educators, signal processing, biomechanics of speech articulators, and muscle mechanics. A Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, his work bridges clinical voice disorders and interdisciplinary collaboration in health research.
Previously, he served as Senior Associate Dean for Research at Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences and directed the Trifecta Initiative for Interdisciplinary Health Research. His NIH-funded studies prioritize teacher vocal wellness, classroom acoustics, and biophysical models of voice production.

Lab & Collaborations: The Voice Biomechanics and Acoustics Lab (V-BAL) at UI unites experts in acoustics, engineering, linguistics, and clinical practice. Key projects include developing machine learning tools for voice disorder screening and understanding vocal effort in multilingual speakers.
