He also heads the Herlenius Research group focused on the Development of Autonomic Control. His roles include Chair of Research and Education for Pediatric Emergency and Infectious Disease at Karolinska University Hospital, and academic leadership in Perinatology education at Karolinska Institutet. He has organized courses in Perinatology for medical students, residents, and PhD candidates since 2009.
Education:
- MD, Karolinska Institutet, 1994
- PhD in Developmental Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, 1998
- Postdoctoral research at Showa University (Tokyo) and Harvard Medical School (Boston), 1998–2000
Research focuses on neonatal respiratory control and autonomic dysfunction, particularly the role of inflammation and prostaglandins in life-threatening events. His group develops AI-driven tools like the Deep-NEWS system for early warning in neonatal sepsis and respiratory failure. Key projects include exploring biomarkers (e.g., urinary prostaglandin metabolites) and machine learning models to improve diagnostics and therapies.
Teaching and Mentoring:

- Supervised over 20 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers
Grants and Collaborations:
- Swedish Research Council grants (e.g., Genes(is) of Inspiration, 2024–2027)
- Swiss National Science Foundation and VINNOVA support
Labs/Teams: Directs the Development of Autonomic Control group, collaborating with KTH Royal Institute of Technology on AI projects. Active in interdisciplinary initiatives like the EMERDENSY-DeepNEWS consortium.
