Eric Henager serves as Associate Professor of Spanish and Section Head of Spanish within the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Rhodes College. He is also a member of the Latin American and Latinx Studies Program Committee, contributing to this interdisciplinary program that examines the experiences, cultural productions, and histories of Latin America and Latinx communities through courses spanning anthropology, sociology, history, economics, and modern languages.
Dr. Henager received his educational foundation at Rhodes College itself, earning his B.A. in Spanish in 1989. He continued his academic journey at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he completed both his A.M. (1992) and Ph.D. (1996) in Hispanic Literatures.
Professor Henager's research interests center on contemporary Spanish American narrative, particularly examining popular culture in literature and literary representations of transculturation. His scholarly work explores Spanish-language fiction set in the U.S. Midwest and investigates how literature and journalism in Latin America modify meanings associated with imported U.S. cultural products, with special attention to baseball. His teaching portfolio includes courses across the Spanish language/culture sequence as well as advanced literature and cultural studies courses aligned with his research specialties.
Analysis of Professor Henager's publications reveals a consistent scholarly trajectory examining cultural intersections between the United States and Latin America, particularly through the lens of sports (baseball) and literary representations. His work demonstrates interdisciplinary approaches connecting literary analysis with cultural studies, history, and sociology to explore how cultural products travel across borders and acquire new meanings in different contexts.
- His 2019 article examines testimonio and post-conflict narrative in U.S. educational contexts
- His 2016-2017 publication analyzes baseball's representation in Dominican literature and print culture
- His 2008 work studies baseball in Nicaraguan literature
As Section Head of Spanish, Professor Henager oversees the Spanish program's curriculum development and instructional quality. His involvement with the Latin American and Latinx Studies Program demonstrates his commitment to interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the region. While specific grant information isn't provided in the available materials, his research output suggests sustained scholarly engagement with Latin American literary and cultural studies.
