Eric HARWIT is a Professor in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, specializing in Chinese political economy, telecommunications policy, and Sino-US relations. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley (1992), an M.A. (1985), and a B.A. from Cornell University (1984). His research focuses on China’s industrial development, telecommunications infrastructure, and the intersection of technology, security, and diplomacy in Asia. He teaches courses on comparative Asian development, China’s economic rise, and East Asian communications technologies.
His recent work includes analyses of China’s 5G technology competition with the US, EV battery global strategies, and the geopolitical implications of Chinese tech firms like Huawei and Tesla. He has authored/co-edited influential books such as China’s Telecommunications Revolution (Oxford, 2008) and China’s Globalizing Internet (Routledge, 2022). His media engagements include interviews on topics like misinformation, US-China trade conflicts, and tech sanctions.
Harwit’s research bridges academia and policy, addressing issues like digital governance, economic security, and cross-border technological collaboration. His teaching and publications emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to understanding China’s evolving role in global technology and economic systems.
