Eric Gaussier is a Professor of Computer Science at University Grenoble Alps and a member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF). He serves as Scientific Director of the Grenoble Interdisciplinary Institute in Artificial Intelligence (MIAI) and has held leadership roles including Director of the Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble (LIG) (2016-2020), Co-founder of Skopaï (AI-driven startup analysis), and Co-director of the Joint Research Center on Data Science between Université Joseph Fourier and University of Technology Sydney (2014-2018).
His research focuses on machine learning, information retrieval, and computational linguistics with emphasis on large-scale multilingual data and theoretical models for data properties. He has contributed to social network analysis, job scheduling optimization via ML, and sequence representation learning (texts/time series).
Notable awards include the ECIR 2016 Test of Time Award for foundational evaluation work, IEEE DSAA 2016 honorable mention, and multiple best paper awards at ICTIR and CORIA conferences. His Xerox-developed clustering/categorization technology earned the Basex Award (2004) and Wall Street Journal Tech Innovation Award (2005).
He has advised PhD student Théo Trouillon, whose work on complex-valued embeddings earned university and AFIA accolades. His academic leadership includes roles in master's program coordination and ERC evaluation panels.
