Eric A. Josephs serves as Empire Innovation Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University's School of Medicine since 2024, following tenure-track positions at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (UNCG). His interdisciplinary career bridges nanotechnology, genomics, and biomechanics with active NIH/NSF funding.
Education
- B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, Duke University (2007)
- Ph.D. in Biological Engineering and Small-scale Technologies, University of California, Merced (2013)
- Postdoctoral Scholar in Molecular Biophysics, Duke University (2018)
Dr. Josephs' research pioneers nanomedicine applications for genomic engineering (evidenced by his patent on RNA-guided endonucleases) and biomechanical modeling of thrombosis and cardiovascular devices. His work integrates synthetic biology principles with nanoscale analytical foundations, supported by multi-institute NIH grants and NSF funding. Teaching portfolio includes graduate courses in Systems and Synthetic Biology, Nanobiology, and Physical Biology.
Scientific Recognition
- 2024 Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering Faculty Award in Research Excellence
- 2024/2023 NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Grantees Conference leadership roles
- 2020 UNCG Faculty Excellence in Research and Creative Activity Honoree
- NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (2014-2016)
Secured funding from NIH (NIGMS, NIBIB, NIAID), NSF, and North Carolina Biotechnology Center for projects including Multiscale Modeling of Thrombosis and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement development. Research group focuses on shear-induced platelet activation mechanisms and nanoscale genomic tools.
