Erdem Avsar is a Tutor in Media, Culture and Society at the University of Glasgow, specializing in transdisciplinary research bridging cultural sociology, performance studies, and queer theory. He holds a PhD in Sociology and Theatre Studies from the University of Glasgow. His work focuses on creative methodologies addressing gender-based violence, LGBTQIA+ rights, and migration injustices through participatory arts-based research. He has delivered lectures internationally and co-convened courses like Producing News in the MSc Media, Communications and International Journalism program.
Research interests include queer dramaturgies, utopian thinking in arts, and media sociology. He has led projects funded by the British Council and British Academy, including the Performance Ecologies initiative and the LLAMIS study on migrant integration in Scotland. Awards include the Kevin Elyot Award (2019) and EU International Plays! Prize (2017).
Publications explore Turkish theatre’s engagement with queer politics and grief, with recent work appearing in Contemporary Theatre Review. His current projects include a monograph on academic infrastructures and utopian impulses, and a dialogic article on queer urban walking experiences. He collaborates with UNESCO RIELA on multilingual performance projects and serves as an affiliate artist.
