Enrique Chagoya is a Full Professor at Stanford University's Department of Art and Art History. A Mexican-born American artist and educator, he critically explores cultural, political, and historical tensions between the U.S. and Latin America through prints, drawings, and collages. His work combines pop culture icons with political commentary, addressing themes of colonialism and globalization.
Education: BFA in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute (1984), MFA from UC Berkeley (1987), and an Honorary Doctorate from the San Francisco Art Institute (2017).
Research focuses on contemporary and Latinx art, printmaking, and digital art, with exhibitions spanning major institutions like the MoMA, Smithsonian, and international venues in Spain, Mexico, and France. His monograph “Alien’s” (2019) documents his artistic practice.
Awardees of prestigious grants including NEA Fellowships, Guggenheim, and Tiffany Foundation support, he has been honored with lifetime achievement awards and induction into the National Academy of Design. Represented by galleries in San Francisco, New York, and Phoenix, his works are held in collections like the MoMA and SFMOMA.
