Enrico Michelini is a Visiting Professor at Humboldt University Berlin within the Faculty of Cultural, Social and Educational Sciences, Institute of Sports Science. He also co-heads the Department of Integration, Sports and Football. His research focuses on sport in relation to physical activity promotion, migration dynamics, social conflict, and extremism prevention.
- 2024–present: Visiting Professor at HU Berlin
- 2013–2024: Research Associate at TU Dortmund University (on leave 2021–2023)
- 2021–2023: Acting Professor of Sports Sociology and Economics at Saarland University
- 2010–2013: Binational PhD in Sports Science (Tübingen & Turin)
Michelini’s research employs sociological and socioecological frameworks to examine:
- Refugee athletes’ integration into elite sports systems
- Sport’s role in refugee camps and community-building
- Media representations of refugees and sports
- Extremism prevention in organized sports
- Policy implications of sport-based integration programs
- Discourse analysis of sports and migration narratives
His recent publications analyze refugee football players in Germany/Italy, socioecological dimensions of sports integration, and media framing of refugee athletes. Current projects include studies on extremism prevention in organized sports and refugee footballers in European leagues.
Michelini collaborates with institutions like UNHCR, UEFA Academy, and DFB-Stiftung Egidius Braun on grants addressing migration, sports, and social cohesion.
