He is also a member of the Law, Organization, Science and Technology (LOST) research network and has co-led the "Plants and Politics" working group at LeipzigLab since January 2024. His academic journey includes postdoctoral research at the Institute of Development Studies (University of Sussex) and fellowship positions at the British Museum and Royal Anthropological Institute.
Dr. Ille's research focuses on the political ecology of Sudan, with particular emphasis on the Nuba Mountains and Northern Sudan. His work spans multiple disciplinary approaches, combining anthropological, historical, and political economic perspectives to examine development interventions, land rights, resource extraction (particularly gold mining), and urbanization processes in Sudan and South Sudan. His current habilitation thesis continues this focus on the political ecology of Sudan.
His scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with themes of power, conflict, and resource governance in Sudan. Through both qualitative fieldwork and historical analysis, Ille examines how local communities navigate state policies, international interventions, and economic transformations. His recent work has increasingly addressed environmental dimensions of social change in the Nile Valley region.
Dr. Ille has secured research funding from various sources including DFID (UK Department for International Development), and has collaborated with institutions such as the Rift Valley Institute, Centre d'études et de documentation économiques, juridiques et sociales au Soudan (CEDEJ), and the Chr. Michelsen Institute. His international research partnerships reflect the transnational nature of his scholarly inquiries.
At Leipzig University, Ille contributes to the academic community through teaching across multiple courses including "Methods in African Studies," "Economy in Africa," and "Academic Writing and Publishing." His pedagogical approach emphasizes critical engagement with African studies methodologies and contemporary issues in the field.
