Professor Enrico Gerding leads the Agents, Interaction and Complexity (AIC) research group at the Department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS), University of Southampton. Since 2007, he has contributed over 130 peer-reviewed publications in AI, multi-agent systems, and game theory. He directs the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Sustainability, training 70 PhD students in environmental AI applications.
His research focuses on autonomous systems, incentive design, and applications in transportation (e.g., AutoTrust platform grant for Connected Autonomous Vehicles), smart grids, and carbon reduction (Shell-funded Centre for Maritime Futures). He co-organized AAMAS 2021 and 2023 conferences and serves on the IFAAMAS board.
Notable projects include AutoTrust (EPSRC-funded), exploring data privacy and traffic optimization for CAVs, and collaborations with Shell on maritime CO2 reduction. Awards include the 2021 AAMAS Blue Sky Ideas Award (Special Mention).
Teaching includes MSc modules on Intelligent Agents and Computational Finance. He has supervised 27 PhD students to completion and actively mentors new students in AI and sustainability-focused research.
